Dr Philip J Wicks CAREER SUMMARY
Forty years’ experience in offshore structural and mechanical engineering, R&D, advanced applied structural mechanics and lecturing. Background comprises extensive practical experience combined with a strong academic and teaching basis.
Graduated in 1978 with a first-class honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Surrey, and in 1986 with a PhD on elastic bucking of structures.
1980 to 1990 was lecturer in Civil Engineering at Surrey University, teaching undergraduate and masters students. Continued research into elastic buckling of arches, beams on elastic foundations and thin rectangular plates; was Director for the MSc course in Structural Engineering.
1990 to 2013, engineer practising in the defence, offshore renewable energy, and offshore oil and gas sectors for various organisations. Project Management, lead technical roles in structural integrity management (SIM), industrial R&D and consulting engineering projects relating to offshore wind turbines, offshore steel fixed platforms, floating structures and pipelines.
2013 to 2017, manager of the UK SIM and Structures Unit of DNV GL. Line management for up to 31 colleagues; with responsibility for staff resourcing and graduate recruitment. Accountable for unit product quality, along with turnover, margin and staff chargeability. Performed business development and customer relationship maintenance; built relationships across DNV GL to promote cross-selling and enhance customer value.
An experienced Quality Auditor; developed Quality Management Systems and written associated documentation conforming to ISO 9001, as well as managing such systems.
Maintains chartered engineer status (CEng): corporate member of the Institutions of Civil and Mechanical Engineers (ICE and IMechE). Has published a book; authored 18 academic and technical papers; made seven industry and conference presentations.
Currently, Director of PJW Technical Services, limited company set up to provide engineering, R&D and educational services.
