PJW Technical Services can provide personal academic tuition that can be one-to-one, or in small groups. Tuition can be carried out on a personal face-to-face basis with students, or remotely through Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
The basis of the services offered is built on a working lifetime of using mathematics for university research & teaching, along with a long career in the engineering industry. The range of maths & related subjects & levels offered covers school (Key Stage 3, GCSE
to Advanced Level) to university structural engineering (levels BEng, MEng
to Masters).
Mathematics -- Key Stage 3 Level
Tuition closely follows the provisions set out in:
Statutory guidance. National curriculum in England: mathematics programmes of study.
Mathematics -- GCSE Level
Tuition can follow the specifications for the following boards:
- AQA -- GCSE MATHEMATICS (8300)
- EdExcel -- Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9 - 1) in Mathematics (1MA1)
- OCR -- GCSE 9-1 MATHEMATICS J560
Mathematics tuition for KS3 & GCSE will be geared towards the general principals underlying the six fundamental subjects of Number; Algebra; Ratio, proportions & rates of change; geometry & measures; probability & statistics.
The aim is for students to:
Develop
fluency in fundamental mathematics through varied & frequent practice, increasing complexity over time, so that conceptual understanding, ability to recall, & apply knowledge rapidly & accurately. develop.
Develop mathematical reasoning: following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships & generalisations, & develop an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
Encouraging problem solving: applying mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication.
Mathematics -- AS-, A- & Further Levels
Tuition follows the specifications for the following examination boards:
- AQA -- AS- (7356) & A-level (7357) Mathematics
- EdExcel -- AS- (8MA0), A- (9MA0), Further AS- (8FM0) & Further A- (9FM0) levels Mathematics
- OCR --
- Specification A, AS- (H230), A- (H240), Further AS- (H235) & Further A- (H245) levels;
- Specification B (MEI), AS- (H630), A- (H640), Further AS- (H635) & Further A- (H645) levels.

University Structural Engineering --BEng/MEng level
The focus is on theory of structures & structural analysis. Content will depend on the syllabus being followed by an individual student, but tuition can be tailored to a student's particular requirements. The subjects that can be covered include:
- Structural principles
- Statically determinate structures
- Elastic deformations of structures
- Statically indeterminate structures
- Stress & elementary elasticity
- Buckling
- Plastic (collapse) analysis
- Introductory structural dynamics
- Introduction to finite element (FE) analysis
University Structural Engineering --Masters level
The focus is on the more advanced aspects of theory of structures & structural/stress analysis that would form part of a masters course in structural engineering. Content will depend on the syllabus being followed by an individual student, but tuition can be tailored to a student's particular requirements. The subjects that can be covered include:
- Indeterminate structures
- Theory of elasticity
- Principles of elastic stability
